Today is Billie Holiday’s birthday and Friday will be Ash’s funeral.
I’ve been listening to Billie today, her smooth, rich voice lulling me into a time and place without boundaries, not of this world. Like a whisp of smoke floating on the breeze is one with the universe, so then am I.
I found this clip from the 1947 film New Orleans drawing me into a reverie somehow strangely familiar. Just a feeling I can’t explain - only feel. Maybe it’s imagining Ash drumming his drum along with the soulful trumpet of Louis and the smooth voice of Lady Day….drumming his drum with an eternal beat in this eternal city………just for us.
Maybe it’s simply the feeling that we who love this city will always share it with Ash…..Sinn Fein.
